On September 06, a pair of Royal Air Force (RAF) Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 fighter jets attacked a Daesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) position which opened fire on Iraqi troops carrying out security operations around 30 miles south of Erbil.
The Iraqi garrison began to take fire from a position in an area of heavy vegetation. Fighter jets were called in for and attacked Daesh with a single 227kg Paveway IV bomb, laser/GPS guided, eliminating the insurgents. Check it out in the video.
“The importance of keeping our focus on Operation Shader during the last few months was highlighted in early September when Typhoons from this air station carried out an attack against Daesh fighters who were engaged with Iraqi forces causing a 'troop ' scenario. '”, said the Wing Commander 'Dutch' Holland, Commanding Officer of the RAF's 903rd Expeditionary Air Wing. “The attack, utilizing a Paveway IV, neutralized the threat and provided stability and security for the troops involved.”
The Paveway IV is one of the newest variants in the Paveway family of pumps. Unlike previous versions, guided only by a laser projected by another aircraft or a ground designator, the IV variant is also guided by GPS/Inertial Navigation, increasing the range of operations in which it can be used. The Paveway kit, produced by Raytheon in the United States, is installed on a conventional bomb – in this case a 82-pound Mk.500 – with the warhead becoming a smart weapon.
