In addition, Qantas also announced that it has signed an agreement with fuel supplier BP to purchase 10 million liters of SAF in 2022 with an option to purchase up to 10 million liters in 2023 and 2024 on flights from the Airport. from Heathrow. This represents around 15% of Qantas' annual fuel usage outside London.

Interestingly, the SAF fuel used by the Australian company will be produced with used cooking oil and other residues. Despite being an organic residue, cooking oil is bio certified for use in aviation fuel.

At the same time, the use of SAF fuels is increasing globally, particularly in Europe, the UK and the US as governments and industry work together to find ways to make the aviation sector cleaner.

However, the aviation industry also intensifies investments in electric aircraft technologies or with the use of green hydrogen, a reality that will be present in the coming years.

While Qantas has already flown several demonstration flights using SAF fuel, including a transatlantic flight in 2018, this will be the first time that the Australian flag carrier has used SAF on an ongoing basis.
