With 150 kilometers traveled by people from all over Brazil between August 4th and 28th, the KLM reached the target proposed in the KLM Cycle for Trees Challenge. The initiative throughout this month reinforced the Dutch airline's commitment to sustainability, and will be concluded in November with the planting of six thousand trees in the Amazon, in partnership with the startup My Tree Foot.
The planting area, equivalent to three football fields, will include three permanent preservation spaces with wet area conditions, which include two water sources. The trees will be planted in November to coincide with the rainy season in the Amazon region. All details are available in a dedicated page.
To ensure the goal of the challenge, KLM also partnered with the app Km Solidarity. The initiative provided that every 25 kilometers pedaled by the challenge participants would be converted by the airline into planting a tree.
To contribute, those interested should select the KLM Pedal for Trees Challenge in the app, start pedaling and, at the end of the activity, synchronize their kilometers, at no financial cost.
“With the contribution of people from all over Brazil, who dedicated time and effort to our challenge, KLM will be able to make a very important social and environmental contribution. We are very proud of what we have accomplished and the result achieved, as we are bringing awareness of this issue to the forefront as we continue our environmental transformation as an airline.” highlights Steven van Wijk, Commercial Director of the Air -KLM Group in South America.
A KLM Bike House, in turn, was the main symbol of this challenge. Located at Rio Pinheiros bike path, in São Paulo, the space received the community of the capital of São Paulo and region, who had the chance to follow the kilometers pedaled in the challenge on a digital scoreboard and learn more about KLM's commitments to the program fly responsibly.
Visitors to the KLM Bike House were also able to participate in a contest in which three tickets to Amsterdam will be drawn — the winners will be announced this Thursday (September 1).
