In a video on social media, Fraport Brasil, of Salgado Filho Airport, in Porto Alegre, gave the first details about the plan to recover the take-off and landing runway as a result of the floods at the beginning of May.
Cássio Gonçalves, Director of Infrastructure and Maintenance at Fraport Brasil, explained in general the condition of the runway, made up of different types of asphalt materials and a concrete slab, which is undergoing evaluation using samples in destructive and non-destructive tests.
Furthermore, Cássio also explains that the runway is made up of several layers, requiring a detailed assessment, making the execution of the recovery project too extensive, justifying the projections of the total resumption of landing and take-off operations only for the end of 2024, as per announced by Fraport.
The specialist explains that the urgency of carrying out operations as quickly as possible will depend on the results of the tests, and the evaluation tests will be vital for preparing the recovery period for the runway to completely restore the structure, making operations safe.
