Floods in RS: FAB Black Hawk rescues stranded pregnant woman

The return of rain to Rio Grande do Sul in recent days has brought more inconvenience to the people of Rio Grande do Sul. Still involved in Operation Taquari II, the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) rescued a pregnant woman stranded in the municipality of Agudo on Wednesday (19). An H-60 ​​Black Hawk helicopter was used on the mission.

On standby at Canoas Air Base – which It has also served as a terminal for flights that would land in Porto Alegre – the Pantera Squadron was called for the Aeromedical Evacuation (EVAM) of the patient, who, according to the FAB, presented bleeding and signs of dehydration. 

Located in the Central Region of RS, the city of Agudo is isolated due to land blockages, a result of the floods that devastated parts of RS in May. Therefore, air rescue was the only alternative.

According to Medical Captain Vinicius Guimarães Tinoco Ayres, the victim demanded swift action from the team. “We had to quickly board her on the aircraft, stabilize her on board and get intravenous access to take her to the nearest reference location”, Explica. “The journey from the point where she was to the hospital was brief, around ten minutes of flight. The removal was really necessary, as there was a tendency for the health condition to worsen over the following hours.”, says the soldier.

The pregnant woman was delivered to medical care on land in stable condition. After disembarking from the aircraft, she was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Field Hospitals in Canoas 

In addition to the extensive use of aerial resources, present in the Operation since the first moments of the floods in RS, the Aeronautics it also maintains a Field Hospital (HCAMP) in Canoas. 

Installed about a month ago, HCAMP 1 and 2 have already provided more than 20 services to the population. They offer psychological, medical and dental assistance, ing public health in the region, highly affected by the floods.

“HCAMP1 came to provide all the care that the city needs, since the basic health units and UPAs are not working”, says the commander of HCAMP1, Medical Major Aluizio Paiva Gonçalves. 

At HCAMP2, dental and gynecological care is among the most demanded, says its commander, Medical Major Ana Maria da Trindade Castello Branco. “We are managing to provide 15 to 20 appointments per day, which is a record for any dentist. We also have, among our diagnostic methods, x-rays and ultrasound, which combined with gynecology, allows us to treat many cases, including some more complex ones.”
