Emirates rolls out virtual safety training for cabin crew

Emirates cabin crew virtual training

Emirates is expanding its MIRA immersive training platform to its number one priority: safety. The airline’s rapidly growing cabin crew team of almost 23, responsible for the safety of millions of engers each year, will soon be able to undertake their ongoing Safety and Emergency Procedures (SEP) training on the MIRA platform.

The self-paced virtual training has been developed to meet the requirements of the UAE Aviation Authority (GCAA) and other regulatory bodies, while maintaining the integrity and quality of Emirates’ exceptional training programmes.

The platform features photorealistic, high-fidelity, fully modeled cabin interiors from Airbus A380, Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 aircraft, as well as emergency slides, runway, bridges
suspended and different views of water and land. In addition, it features hyper-realistic sound and visuals. Multi- scenarios with avatars playing the role of crew will ensure accurate reproduction of standard operating procedures.

While Emirates’ iconic cabin crew are known for delivering the airline’s signature service, their primary responsibility is to ensure safety on board. The SEP training on the MIRA platform has been developed to complement the current methodology and will initially be delivered with two modules: aircraft door operations and firefighting, which are essential aspects of onboard safety.

Opening and closing heavy aircraft doors requires skill and experience. If opened incorrectly, the emergency slide can inflate, causing injury and damage to the aircraft and skybridges. This is why cabin crew are required to complete SEP training every year.

Emirates cabin crew will soon be conducting gate operations virtually to assess their skills in normal and emergency gate operations and standard operating procedures.

Firefighting skills are also essential for cabin crew. The MIRA platform will feature a series of fire scenarios involving ovens, overhead compartments and lavatories. Cabin crew will have the chance to demonstrate their skills in using a fully modelled fire extinguisher with visual and sound effects of smoke and flames, as well as fire extinguishing substances.

Emirates’ ongoing SEP training on the MIRA platform is designed to deliver even greater benefits to cabin crew, training staff and customer experience. The airline will leverage its existing platform, optimising creative assets and extending it for a more holistic and complete employee training experience.

3D modules with virtual reality (VR) headsets can be run in three different modes: Teach, Practice and Assessment. Around 8 to 10 cabin crew can be trained and assessed simultaneously in their own VR space in the same scenario. Trainers and facilitators can use a variety of metrics to adjust training programs.

A 2D version can be accessed on all mobile devices, laptops and desktops, meaning cabin crew do not have to travel to training locations at fixed times. This means cabin crew can practice and refresh their knowledge anytime, anywhere – whether relaxing at home, between flights or on the way to work. The fact that there is no need to build and maintain training facilities, reproduce interiors and purchase equipment will bring significant savings – both ecologically and financially.

The training team can recreate complex or dangerous situations of any intensity in a safe environment. This allows crew to practice worst-case scenarios and make mistakes until they are fully prepared and confident to deal with emergencies on board. Training on the MIRA platform can also help to calm the nerves of new cabin crew as it can be done repeatedly, reinforcing knowledge and understanding with engagement.

In 2023, the Emirates Group began using MIRA, its futuristic and immersive digital platform and the first in the aviation industry. The platform is transforming the experiences of Emirates employees, especially cabin crew and new hires. Virtual hubs, virtual training, gamified environments, simulated experiences and many other 3D capabilities have been incorporated into the MIRA platform.
