Last Saturday (08/06), the Airspace Control Department (DECEA) activated the Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) in Porto Alegre. The measure aims to accommodate exceptional and emergency takeoffs for the removal and/or transfer of aircraft that were parked at Salgado Filho Airport, before the flood that closed the place on May 03rd.
The implementation of the service made it possible to carry out eight takeoffs this afternoon, during the period from 12pm to 16pm. The operation took place in coordination with the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and Fraport, the concessionaire that manages Salgado Filho Airport, ensuring the organized and safe flow of aircraft. With the implementation of AFIS Porto Alegre, aircraft can take off under instrument flight rules, with greater precision and safety in operations.
The service involved the coordinated work of military air traffic controllers, meteorologists and the aeronautical information service of the Second Integrated Center for Air Defense and Airspace Control. “We are committed to minimizing the impacts of the flood and ensuring the continuity of air operations. Our professionals acted as planned, maintaining the integrity of operations and airport structures”, stated the Head of the DECEA Operations Sub-Department, Air Brigadier André Gustavo Fernandes Peçanha.
An aeronautical telecommunications station provided the flight information service for aerodrome traffic and, in addition, the warning service for aircraft flying in the lower airspace within a radius of 27 nautical miles – the equivalent of 50 km – of the aerodrome. The measure ensured that all aircraft received the information necessary to operate safely, even in adverse conditions.
Furthermore, the operation was ed by a surface meteorological station. This station is capable of providing accurate, real-time information on wind speed and direction, visibility and atmospheric pressure, ensuring efficient and safe flight conduction.
The aircraft had been parked at Salgado Filho Airport since the location was closed due to the floods that affected the region. During this period, teams worked tirelessly to find solutions that would allow the safe removal of these aircraft, ensuring the continuity of essential air operations.
DECEA is committed to providing to operators so that they can remove their aircraft from Salgado Filho Airport, enabling the resumption of flight flow by affected airlines and the start of necessary repairs at the airport's facilities. By enabling the removal of aircraft and the return to normality, DECEA reaffirms its commitment to the safety and efficient management of Brazilian airspace.
