GOL, LATAM Brasil and VOE, of the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR), have already transported, free of charge, 769 tons of donations to Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of May. Together, they carried out humanitarian flights to several airports in RS in last month, allowing donations from all over Brazil and other countries to reach the state. Airlines also transported volunteers and medical teams during the period.
“The world came together to raise donations for Rio Grande do Sul and airlines contribute free of charge to this transport, helping families who were unfortunately affected by the floods. ABEAR and its associates reinforce the humanitarian role of aviation, from the free transport of organs for transplants and the distribution of more than 400 million Covid-19 vaccines during the pandemic”, says the president of ABEAR, Jurema Monteiro.
Extra flight network
Last month, the airlines' efforts also included the creation of a network of extra flights to the states of RS and Santa Catarina, due to the closure of Salgado Filho Airport in Porto Alegre. The network comprises nine airports in both states. The Canoas Air Base, in the metropolitan region of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, is also receiving commercial flights.
