Air tickets lead high inflation in transport in May, says IBGE

The IBGE released this Thursday (09/06) Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) in May was 0,47%, 0,59 percentage points (pp) below the rate of 1,06% in April.

In the first five months of 2022, the IPCA accumulates an increase of 4,78% and, in the last 12 months, of 11,73%, below the 12,13% observed in the immediately previous 12 months. In May 2021, the variation had been 0,83%.

In the Transport group, which had an overall rise of 1,34%, the major contribution came from airline tickets (18,33%), which had already risen in April (9,48%). The transport sector was also the main contributor to the 0,47% increase in the IPCA in May.

It is worth mentioning that we published twice in April and this month that Petrobras imposed an 18% readjustment and right after 6,7%. From January 1st to May 1st, the increase reached 48,7%, according to Petrobras data compiled by the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR).

Kerosene is one of the main inputs used by airlines and s for up to 40% of the cost of a flight. Therefore, the increase in fuel prices directly influences the average price of airline tickets.
