Airbus announces feasibility studies for SAF in Latin America

Airbus and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have announced an agreement to develop feasibility studies on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for Argentina, Panama and Peru. The announcement was made during the 18th Meeting of Civil Aviation Authorities of the South American Region in São Paulo.

Airbus will contribute to the ICAO Voluntary Environmental Fund to conduct SAF feasibility studies. These studies will be part of the ICAO Assistance, Capacity Building and Training for SAF (ACT-SAF) Programme, which s States to develop their potential in developing and deploying SAF.

This is the first time that an ACT-SAF feasibility study has been funded by an aerospace player, reaffirming Airbus’ commitment to leading the decarbonization of the aviation sector. To this end, investing in SAF is key to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Today, SAF can reduce CO2 emissions by an average of up to 80% over its lifecycle. Airbus s the large-scale development of SAF and collaborates with airlines, airports, producers, research institutes and civil aviation authorities worldwide to advance the SAF ecosystem, addressing the regulatory and policy environment as well as supply and demand factors.

The announcement comes at an important time for Latin America, a region where progress has been made in developing the regulatory framework for SAF in countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Chile.
