Airlines moved 1,2 million tons of cargo in 2024

Air cargo transportation moved, until October of this year, 1,2 million tons of cargo, a volume 10,2% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2023. The data was presented by the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR) this Thursday (28) during the Voices of the Air Sector event, which brought together representatives of the federal government, the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), airlines and airport concessionaires in Brasília to discuss scenarios and opportunities in the cargo market.

Brazilian airlines transported 405,3 thousand tons in the domestic market, which represents an increase of 12,5% compared to the amount moved last year. In the international market, with movements by Brazilian and foreign companies, 843,3 thousand tons of cargo were transported, 9,1% more than 2023. When compared to the same period in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, domestic cargo transportation grew 9% and international cargo transportation grew 20%, respectively.

“This increase is quite significant. Exports are driving up the numbers in the international segment, but domestic indicators are also noteworthy, with a double-digit variation compared to 2023. As in the enger market, we are seeing a solid recovery in cargo volume. And there is potential to increase these numbers, especially in the domestic segment. We have to work together to continue growing,” says ABEAR president Jurema Monteiro.

For ANAC director Ricardo Catanant, air cargo transportation needs predictability and legal certainty to continue growing. “We need to shed light on the regulatory model and discuss the specificities together with the industry players. We also need to think of new ways to attract businesspeople to make greater use of air cargo transportation,” he pointed out.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us. Sometimes, the topic of engers takes up more space on the agenda, but we certainly need to increase the debate on cargo. The National Secretariat of Civil Aviation is available to work together with ABEAR and partners to address demands,” added SAC’s Investment Director, Luiza Deusdará.

According to the Director of External Relations of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Marcelo Pedroso, there needs to be synergy between airlines and the Federal Revenue Service in international cargo transportation. “We are willing to contribute to bringing international experiences to the table, always aiming to improve procedures here in the country,” he said.

Representatives from the Federal Revenue Service, Brazilian Airports (ABR), Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and industry consultants were also present at the event.
