SkyWest, the largest regional airline in the United States, has ambitious plans for its Embraer 175 during the year 2022 and 2023.
According to information from Simple flying, the regional company received at the end of 2021 and beginning of this year 18 of 20 new E175s to enter service by American Airlines, in addition, the airline expects to receive another 16 jets for Delta Air Lines and 11 aircraft for Alaska Airlines.
Interestingly, as it is the largest regional airline in the United States, SkyWest provides services to several airlines, which justifies its large fleet of 509 aircraft, with the Embraer 175 as the dominant aircraft with 211 units, see below for details of the fleet:
- 211 E175
- 44 CRJ900
- 114 CRJ700
- 140 CRJ200
For comparison, during 2021, Skywest had 193 units of the Embraer 175, increasing the share of the regional jet to 211 units, which shows that the company intends to keep the jet as its main equipment for the coming years.
Despite the fact that the number of aircraft is not a problem for SkyWest, the company has been facing problems in hiring new pilots aimed at operating in regionals. However, this scenario is completely different in the main airlines, where the number of pilots has been reduced due to the low demand generated by the coronavirus crisis.
In view of the success of the E175 E1 in the United States, it remains to be seen whether the E175 E2 will have the same fate, since the aircraft exceeds the maximum weight allowed for regional operations by almost 6.000 kg, with a maximum weight of 39.000 kg.
