The first two Airbus A321P2F freighters of the airline Azul Linhas Aéreas took off today Saturday (15) from Viracopos Airport. The first aircraft, PS-AJA, took off at around 7 am bound for Recife Airport and then to Manaus Airport.
The second aircraft, PS-AJB, took off directly to Manaus at around 11:30 a.m. with an inauguration event for the flights. Azul will begin operating the two freighters on the Viracopos (V) Recife (REC) and Manas (MAO) routes. In the future, it will expand its routes to South America.
The new A321 freighters can carry up to 50% more cargo volume and 39% more weight. And they are also more efficient thanks to their V2533 engines and their greater volume per flight. The A321P2F can optimize the payload transported by Azul, resulting in a 27% reduction in fuel consumption per ton x km transported per year, compared to the previous fleet – and, thus, reduce the company's CO₂ emissions by 9 thousand tons per year, for the same annual payload.
In addition to offering greater capacity for cargo supply and delivery and being more sustainable, another distinguishing feature of this first Airbus A321 from Azul Cargo is its ability to land at airports of various sizes and infrastructures — which is in line with the company's ideals of connecting the country, serving the largest number of locations and all regions. Izabel Reis, director of Azul Cargo, also reveals that the plans for these aircraft include expanding the service of Azul's cargo unit outside of Brazil. "Our two Airbus 321s have the autonomy to operate international flights, which has already led us to plan our next routes to other countries. We also want to use them for charter services," says the executive.
