The actions promoted by Azul Linhas Aéreas for 13 years with its traditional Pink October campaign have gone far beyond guidance and awareness on the prevention and early treatment of breast cancer. There are numbers and news that have increasingly motivated the airline and its Crew to not only be proud to change color this month in favor of the cause, but, what's better, to transform all this pink symbolism into concrete attitudes throughout the year.
The airline celebrated, for example, the 89% increase in the last two years – even in the midst of the pandemic – in the number of mammography exams carried out by its Crew . Since then, more than 5 thousand exams have been carried out, or an average of 100 per month.
Another initiative should reinforce the health care that the company already offers through its medical team in the corporate environment and its programs focused on medical care, well-being and quality of life. From now on, imaging and routine exams for diagnosing breast cancer will be enhanced by great technological help.
Thanks to Azul's partnership with healthtech Viziomed, it will be possible to track suspicious results through AI image processing and notify doctors in time and accelerate the detection of a malignant tumor – even at an early stage, if the Crew Member agrees to share their medical data after a routine mammogram.
According to the occupational doctor and Health and Wellbeing manager at Azul, Helton Dourado, this is made possible by the operation of an integrated communication and image archiving system installed in several hospitals and diagnostic clinics in the country that filters, collects images, hides patient data and sends the results for analysis to a platform guided by Artificial Intelligence. “In seconds, a pre-report, based on a type of AI specialized in breast cancer, is made available to the medical team on an online platform, with the difference that, if it is an emergency case, it is placed on the top of the priority list. In this case, an alert notice is also sent to the responsible doctor”, he explains.
To authorize this medical and technological monitoring for each breast cancer preventive exam, every Azul Crew member only needs to fill out a document that allows them to share their data during and after the procedure. The objective, with this new development, is to further expand the search for prevention and increase the chances of early diagnosis, which, as is already known in relation to breast cancer, can increase the chances of curing the disease to up to 95%..
“For us at Azul, who are a company of people for people, Pink October is much more than a period of reflection. We encourage our Crew and Customers to take care of themselves throughout the year, strengthening recommendations for screening and early diagnosis of breast cancer. Awareness can save lives, which is why, every year, we carry out internal and external actions aimed at the campaign”, concludes Jason Ward, vice president of People, Customers and ESG at Azul.
