Boeing has pleaded guilty to one count of fraud in investigations involving the two fatal 737 MAX crashes.
As a result, the manufacturer will have to pay a fine of US$243,6 million to the US Department of Justice, as reported in Reuters. The decision comes after Boeing was discovered to have violated an agreement signed in 2021 regarding two accidents in 2018 and 2019.
Despite the decision, the families of the victims of the two accidents that resulted in the death of 346 people asked for more severe penalties for Boeing, pressure that has been endorsed after another episode involving planes from the MAX family, when an Alaska Airlines MAX 9 lost a fuselage in mid-flight.
Given the unfavorable situation for Boeing, the company has received a lot of criticism regarding its reliability, mainly due to the fact that the manufacturer has billion-dollar contracts with the US Department of Defense, NASA and other government bodies.
Following an agreement with the Department of Justice, Boeing has committed to investing over US$450 million over the next three years in safety programs, and top executives will have to hold a meeting with the victims' families.
