Brazilian Championship Series A begins to offset carbon emissions from flights and sets an example for the world

Boeing 737 MAX GOL receives new special paintwork with a focus on sustainability Carbon neutral Emissions

Everyone knows that our Brasileirão is recognized as the biggest and one of the most difficult national championships, with many games and air travel of thousands of kilometers. With the aim of minimizing the impact of greenhouse gas emissions during the air travel of Brasileirão Series A teams, CBF, GOL Linhas Aéreas and Grupo Águia, counting on the technical of Moss, signed an unprecedented partnership to offer a solution CO2 compensation that benefits Amazon forest conservation projects.

Since the start of the tournament in April, clubs that travel exclusively through Grupo Águia with air travel made by GOL have already been compensating for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Until December 3, the date of the last round of the Brasileirão, more than 683 thousand km will be covered, which projects a compensation of 4 thousand tons of CO2eq emitted on the routes to and from the championship. Together, Grupo Águia and GOL reinforce their role in controlling carbon emissions.

Started in June 2021, the compensation of emissions from GOL flights neutralized, by August 2023, 15,4 thousand tons of CO2eq on a voluntary basis by customers, on GOL's carbon neutral routes (Recife-Fernando de Noronha and Congonhas-Bonito ) and in specific actions. The compensating amount is equivalent to 3.856 hectares preserved for one year or 2.217.562 trees preserved for one year — or even the maintenance of 4.674 FIFA standard football fields of native nature.

“GOL and CBF have been partners for 10 years and this initiative, together with Grupo Águia and Moss, opens up new sustainable perspectives for Brasileirão team travel. Furthermore, it reinforces the Company's commitment to preserving the environment and developing sport. We hope that this example will reach more clubs and associations, engaging other Brazilian companies to also carry out their trips neutralizing their carbon footprint”, says Renzo Mello, director of Sales Channels at GOL.

Grupo Águia, a hub with companies in different areas of tourism and responsible for the logistics of several clubs in the Brasileirão Series A for over 30 years, has had carbon neutral offices since 2021 and an ambitious target of neutralizing 50% of emissions from its operations. later this year and 100% by 2025. This partnership is another step towards achieving this objective.

In 2010, the Águia Verde project was created, focused on the forest restoration of the Atlantic Forest as a response to the displacements made by the operational team responsible for the Brazilian fans for the South African Cup. “Since then, the Group's customers have also had the possibility of contribute to the planting of tree seedlings in one of the richest biomes in the world, providing even better destinations for your trips”, highlights Thiago Abrahão, CEO of Grupo Águia. According to him, using tourism and football as platforms to stimulate and expand practices that have a positive impact on customers and partners is the real goal of this action.

The Brasileirão project became a reality with the technology developed by Moss, which facilitates the process of neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions, making it possible to compensate for each segment flown.

For example, a Ponte Aérea flight emits around 0,07 tons of CO2eq per enger and compensation is given by an increase of approximately R$5,53 (round trip) when purchasing the ticket directly at the check-in from GOL. For each stretch, the client receives a certificate of neutralization and for Amazon forest conservation projects.

“We all know the influence that football teams have on the lives of Brazilians. This initiative directly contributes to raising awareness among the population, who will be able to perceive CO2 compensation as a simple but high-impact act.”, comments Moss CEO, Luis Adaime.

The credits used to compensate for flights follow international VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) certification standards. And to guarantee an extra layer of security in transactions, Moss uses token MCO2 that makes each credit unique, traceable and much more secure with all transactions recorded in Blockchain.

The partnership between Grupo Águia, GOL, CBF and Moss shows how purchasing and compensating through carbon credits are simple and accessible attitudes, also adding value for the football teams involved, as they are concrete examples. In the end, the environment is the big winner in this match.
