In 2023, Brazilian commercial aviation contributed R$81 billion to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This number represents an increase of 3,8% compared to 2022, when the sector contributed R$78 billion to Brazil's GDP. This is what the new Aviation Panorama from the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR) reveals. In a 100% digital format and with unprecedented data on the aviation sector, the Panorama was officially launched this Thursday (26) at ABAV Expo 2024, the largest tourism fair in Latin America, held between September 26 and 28, in Brasília.

The GDP calculation considers the sum of goods and services from national commercial aviation. In 2023, the aviation sector was also responsible for generating R$34,7 billion in salaries and R$25,4 billion in taxes collected. The amount of salaries in 2022 was R$34,2 billion, while the amount collected in taxes was R$21,3 billion.

Based on data provided by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), the ABEAR publication also reveals that commercial aviation had 52.214 formal jobs in 2023, an increase of 7,69% compared to 2022, when the number of vacancies totaled 48.485.

A new feature of the new ABEAR Panorama is access to state data on GDP, employment, wages and taxes paid indicators. Based on these indicators, it is possible to see, for example, that the number of jobs in the aviation sector in Alagoas, Amapá, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and the Federal District is above the national average of 1% of the total number of jobs, considering the sum of 990 thousand direct, indirect, induced and catalyzed jobs by the sector throughout the country in 2023. In São Paulo, the aviation sector represents 1,61% of the total number of jobs in the state, suring the mark of 300 thousand occupations.

New Panorama

Previously published annually in print and PDF format, the new Panorama is now updated periodically, including the latest data. At launch, the platform already has figures available for some indicators up to June 2024.

“Since its first publications, Panorama has become a reference on Brazilian commercial aviation, contributing to the understanding of the scenario and challenges of the sector that generates employment, income, social well-being, business and wealth, and is fundamental for the country's economic and social development”, says ABEAR president, Jurema Monteiro.

The new Panorama provides an interactive query that shows, since 2012, the variation in the exchange rate, the price of aviation kerosene (QAV), the National Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) and the average airfare. The data show, for example, that, from January 2018 to June 2024, the exchange rate varied by 67,9% and QAV, by 48,5%. Unlike these indicators, the real average fare increased by 11% in the period, which reflects the efforts of airlines to not on the cost pressure to consumers. Currently, the level of seats offered by airlines is already 5,9% higher than that observed in the first half of 2019. It is also worth noting that approximately 60% of airline expenses are dollarized, and QAV impacts approximately 40% of the sector's costs.
