British airline announces closure of operations

FlyBMI announced this past Friday that it would stop operating all its flights from February 16th, after being severely affected by a variation in the market and future limitations of Brexit.

The company at the time of its bankruptcy was operating with 17 planes, serving 25 destinations in Europe. A total of 376 employees worked at the company.

Flying from Aberdeen, Derry, Bristol, East Midlands, Stansted and Newcastle in the UK, its planes flew to destinations in the Czech Republic, Denmark, , , Italy, Norway, Poland and Sweden.

Affected engers were advised to their travel agents, those who purchased directly with the airline should their insurance and credit card companies to request a refund of their ticket.

In a statement, Flybmi said: “It is with a heavy heart that we make this inevitable announcement.

“The airline has faced a number of difficulties, including recent increases in fuel and carbon costs, the latter stemming from the recent EU decision to exclude UK airlines from full participation in the Emissions Trading Scheme.

“Current trade and future prospects have also been seriously affected by the uncertainty created by the Brexit process, which has led to our inability to secure valuable flight contracts in Europe.”
