Chapecó Airport saves 70% by reusing water from its sewage treatment plant

Chapecó Airport water reuse

Chapecó Airport, a reference in air mobility in the interior of Santa Catarina, has new developments on its sustainability agenda. Managed by Voe Xap, a company of the Socicam Group, since December 2020 and with expanded and fully renovated facilities since 2022, the enterprise recently invested in an initiative that will promote savings of 70% of its monthly water consumption.

This will be possible through the reuse of effluent generated by its Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in activities that are currently carried out with potable water, but which do not require this level of quality. With the capacity to supply 390 thousand liters of treated water per month, the STP will supply routine operations, such as testing fire trucks, washing access roads, the waste center, the gas station, training firefighters, and irrigating green areas.

As a result, the consumption of drinking water, which previously reached 550 thousand liters per month, will be reduced to just 160 thousand liters, reserved exclusively for activities that require potability, while the remainder will be supplied by the ETE.

According to a Filipe Gomes, manager of Chapecó Airport, the licensing for the reuse of effluent represents an important step towards reducing environmental impacts. “In addition to implementing sewage treatment, we have made even further progress by obtaining the license to reuse the water resulting from this process. It is important to highlight that, despite being classified as non-potable, this water is sanitary safe and will significantly reduce our current consumption, minimizing impacts on the planet”, he states.

“In the near future, we are also studying the possibility of directing treated water to flush toilets and even to irrigate gardens and other crops in surrounding areas, always following the methods indicated by the competent bodies”, concludes Gomes.

To Alexander Cerqueira, Director of the Airports Division at Socicam, the adoption of sustainable initiatives is part of the company's ESG strategy. “By investing in environmentally responsible technological innovations, we reaffirm our ability to go beyond mobility operations, demonstrating our commitment to contributing to a healthier planet for future generations,” he says.

“We understand that efficient airport management involves providing safe and comfortable equipment, such as the investment in expanding and modernizing the enger terminal at Chapecó Airport, but also through the commitment to adopt initiatives that reduce environmental impacts,” concludes Cerqueira.
