In a meeting this morning (3/6) at Porto Alegre airport, which was attended by Paulo Pimenta, Minister of the Extraordinary Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic for for the Reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul, Tiago Pereira, President Director of Anac, Tomé Franca, National Secretary of Civil Aviation, Frederico Antunes, state deputy and president of the Parliamentary Aviation Front, Pedro Capeluppi, secretary of reconstruction in Rio Grande do Sul and executives from Fraport Brasil, details were presented about the airport's situation and steps towards reconstruction.
With the reduction of water accumulated at the airport site, the process of cleaning the landing and take-off runway began today. Cleaning consists of a broad sweep across the entire length of runways, taxiways and aircraft aprons to remove rubble and debris. In parallel, tests and surveys were started to assess the soil's resistance, from compaction to paving, so that it is technically possible to confirm the impacts caused by the accumulation of water during the last few weeks. This testing period is expected to last approximately 45 days, depending on weather conditions. It is estimated that at the beginning of July it will be possible to detail the needs for interventions on the track.
Regarding the equipment affected by the flood, it is not yet possible to detail the total value of the damage and which equipment will need to be replaced or repaired. Since the waters began to recede, Fraport Brasil has been in permanent with insurance companies to assess the scenario, receiving recurring inspections and carrying out an inventory of all items that were impacted.
Furthermore, in the meeting with the authorities, the concessionaire reinforced its commitment to the resumption of the airport, as well as expressing its action since the beginning of the climate crisis, looking after the airport and its infrastructure, as well as facilitating access to equipment, pumps and personnel, to speed up the removal of water from the airport and its surroundings.
Since the beginning of the crisis, Fraport Brasil has been in open dialogue with the federal government and related authorities so that the recovery occurs as quickly as possible. Andreea Pal, CEO of Fraport Brasil, evaluates today's meeting and inspection as positive for the next steps: “we are working with the Federal Government to accelerate the resumption of the airport. We are doing our part with several activities that have already started. If the impacts are smaller than initially predicted, let’s hope that the airport will be available by the end of the year.”
