Congonhas Airport receives international sustainability award for waste management

Congonhas Airport

Congonhas Airport, managed by Aena, was awarded the “Green Airport Recognition” during the annual event of the Airports Council International of Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC), held in Guadalajara, Mexico. The award aims to promote best environmental practices to reduce the impact of aviation and recognize airports with exceptional achievements in sustainable projects.

The new measures will reduce the volume of common materials sent to landfills by 20% to 30% and increase the amount of recycled materials by three to four times. Congonhas, which generates around 5,5 tons of waste per day, will redirect between 400 and 600 tons per year for recycling, avoiding sending them to landfills. The initiative enables socio-environmental actions through partnerships with NGOs and other organizations.

Juazeiro do Norte airport

Juazeiro do Norte Airport also received the “Green Airport Recognition” award for its water efficiency model developed by a group of Aena Brasil employees to address the challenges of the semi-arid climate in the Cariri region of Ceará. The model integrates water treatment plants (WTP) and sewage treatment plants (STP), allowing every drop to be used – from rainwater, collected by a system of roof gutters, to total reuse in the airport facilities. Sewage treatment is now carried out without having to circulate through the public network. And the treated water, previously destined for a nearby natural sink, is returned to irrigation, restrooms and the fire truck, providing an estimated cost reduction of 15% of total annual expenditure and promoting a circular economy, water efficiency and better use of the airport’s infrastructure.
