Deputy presents project to improve security at Santos Dumont Airport

Federal deputy Jerônimo Goergen (PP-RS) recently presented a project to improve security at Santos Dumont Airport.

At the Aeronauts Parliamentary Front (FPAer) the deputy presented an expansion of the local runway with EMAS (Engineered Material Arresting System), the same type of technology that is being implemented at Congonhas Airport. The goal is to make investment in this solution viable during the concession of the terminal.

Currently, the concession project reserves a future grounding area in Guanabara Bay for the expansion of the runway. Deputy Jerônimo's proposal is to avoid yet another landfill in Guanabara Bay, and also the possibility of it falling into the hands of justice, due to the limitation of construction on the site established by Iphan.

“This discussion would drag on for years in the courts. We have a highly effective alternative that does not harm the environment and provides greater security for airport operations. EMAS guarantees the stop of aircraft and saves lives”, said the president of the FPAer.

"It is something revolutionary for flight safety in Brazil. We are creating an escape area built with cellular concrete made from recycled glass. This material deforms when an aircraft crosses the final limit of the runway and promotes its gradual and safe deceleration. We are offering a real chance to prevent tragedies like those that have occurred in the past”, completed deputy Jerônimo Goergen.

Probably the EMAS implemented in Santos Dumont can be similar to the one existing at Congonhas Airport, including a length of 75 meters long and 45 meters wide.

The EMAS system (Engineered Materials Arrestor System) is made of a special material that favors the braking of aircraft in case of leaving runways, one of the accidents that happen the most in the world.

In 2016 we cite here a case, which occurred with a Donald Trump campaign plane, which used EMAS at La Guardia Airport, in New York (image above), proving the efficiency in stopping the plane before it leaves the asphalt paving.

Paving is made with the purpose of deforming and breaking if subjected to the weight of an aircraft. As a result, the pavement itself creates rolling resistance on the aircraft's landing gear, and brings the aircraft to a standstill without an accident occurring first.
