Ahead of taking delivery of the highly anticipated Airbus A350 aircraft that will its fleet, Emirates has invested around US$48 million in state-of-the-art equipment and systems for training pilots and cabin crew.
The acquisitions include three full flight simulators equipped with innovative pilot systems (PSS), a fixed-base training device, an emergency cabin evacuation simulator and an entry and emergency door simulator. This investment reinforces the airline’s commitment to achieving the highest standards and excellence in cabin crew training.
The PSS is an industry first and was developed entirely in-house by Emirates to enhance the training experience. During the briefing phase, it allows students to perform an interactive cockpit setup, including creating a flight plan, in a fully immersive environment. The setup is recalled each time students log back into the simulator to resume training. The PSS debrief mode allows the instructor to replay the recorded session to review student performance.
The airline’s first full-flight simulator for the A350 aircraft has been awarded a Level D qualification, the highest for this type of simulator, by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The initial qualification was achieved as no incidents were identified, another notable achievement in the simulation industry. The advanced technology not only increases training efficiency, but also empowers pilots to confidently master the skills required to perform operations properly.
Emirates has ordered three full flight simulators for its A350 fleet. The second A350 simulator is currently in its acceptance stage and is expected to receive EASA approval in November.
The A350 aircraft’s fixed-base training device replicates the cockpit, using visual and audio systems to make training sessions more realistic.
Captain Bader Al Marzooqi, Emirates’ Senior Vice President of Flight Training, said: “Innovation is in Emirates’ DNA, and this includes our new A350 training equipment and our advanced pilot training facility, which will open later this year and will expand our pilot training capacity by 54%. With the investment in new simulators and systems, our pilots and cabin crew are prepared, trained and highly confident to handle any operational challenge safely and competently.”
Shaping the future of aviation
Today, the airline has trained around 30 pilots and 820 cabin crew. By the end of November, more than 50 pilots will have completed training on the A350’s full-flight simulators before it enters service. Emirates’ pilots and cabin crew receive robust, evidence-based training delivered in-house by highly experienced instructors in purpose-built training environments.
Additionally, in June this year, Emirates announced a collaboration with IATA and Airbus to deliver an enhanced competency-based training and assessment programme for the A350 aircraft type.
Future fleet
For its next phase of growth, Emirates has 65 A350 aircraft and a mix of 205 777X aircraft in its order book that will help the airline achieve its expansion targets and provide flexibility to launch new routes and better serve its existing network routes.
State-of-the-art pilot training facilities
Emirates is set to open its advanced pilot training facility later this year. The 5880-square-foot facility will2 can house six compartments with full flight simulators of the A350 and Boeing 777X aircraft. Across the airline’s pilot training facilities, Emirates pilots will be able to hone their skills on 17 full flight simulators that provide over 130 hours of training per year.
Emirates is accelerating its pilot recruitment process. Those interested in becoming part of Emirates’ elite pilots can for an online information session to be held on 16 October. here.
