The night photograph of an RV-8 plane, belonging to the Fox Squadron, taken by Sergeant Johnson Barros, of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), is among the three best in the world in the General Aviation category, according to the specialized magazine Aviation Week, one of the most respected in the area. The image entitled “Ciranda Estrelar” was produced in July of that year, in Brasília (DF).
Sergeant Johnson explains that, for the click to occur, it was necessary to plan the entire composition of the image. It started with a drawing and for it to become reality it was made with a mixture of techniques – light painting (paint with light), exposure stacking (stacking photos to take advantage of the lit parts) and astrophotography, a specialized type that involves recording images of celestial bodies and large areas of the night sky.
According to the military, it all started with the planning that involved studying the map of the region, the meteorology and the celestial chart of the most favorable day. Putting all the elements in their respective places, the camera began to the movement of the stars in the sky, together with the impression of the lights of flash and flashlight, with which the photographer revealed the plane invisible to human eyes in that situation. “The only thing that wasn't anticipated was a shooting star that appeared in the photograph,” he comments.
Recognition

For Sergeant Johnson, more important than an award and a photograph, work is the expression of ions that he has cultivated since childhood, starting with drawings of airplanes in his notebooks. “Over the years, photography has become my way of communicating and, therefore, I ended up ing the team at the Aeronautics Social Communication Center [CECOMSAER]. At FAB, when I think of a photograph, I imagine thousands of young people who can be excited to see an image and see themselves wearing blue in the future ”, he opines.
Careers
Other photographs of Sergeant Johnson have already received recognition from various publications, entities and websites. her own Aviation Week already placed him as one of the best in the world other times (2009, 2013, 2014, 2015). Five years ago, the photo of an A-29 Super Tucano da FAB appeared on the list of the 25 best images in the world, selected from the Flickr social network. In 2017, the Bell H-13 helicopter photo da FAB was chosen among the top fifteen of Flickr Brazil.
In his training, the military took the course Seeing Through Photographs, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, United States. He also trained in the areas of Creation and Elaboration, Cinematography and Data Processing Technology.
With 20 years of active service in the FAB, Sergeant Johnson is a specialist in Aircraft Maintenance. His career as a photographer began when he served in the 1st Air Defense Group, in Anápolis (GO), where he recorded the Mirage III that operated in that Unit. Currently, he works at CECOMSAER.
