Investigators received yesterday (June 17) the two black boxes from the flight. The second black box of the plane that plunged May 19 into the Mediterranean Sea with 66 people on board has already been found and recovered: it has been announced by the Egyptian investigation team in charge of the case. On Thursday, the black box containing the cockpit voice recording had been recovered.
The first of the two black boxes, which contains the recording of the voices in the cabin, was found yesterday by the vessel “John Lethbridge”. The ship, equipped for recovery at great depths, identified several areas where the wreckage of the plane was found.
Sixteen days ago, a statement by the Commission of Inquiry into the accident had reported that “in the research area of the plane wreckage, the French ship Laplace (another ship published on the site) intercepted signals from the bottom of the sea, which may have been emitted by a of the two black boxes of the Airbus.
The two black boxes should stop emitting signals on the 24th of June. The announcement was made a few days ago by the same commission investigating the plane crash. The recovery of the two black boxes is crucial in determining the circumstances in what, until now, is still regarded as an "accident", although Egypt has repeatedly advanced the hypothesis of a terrorist attack. But the state in which the black boxes are found complicates the search for truth.
