Greek F-16C crashes on landing

An F-16C Block 52+ fighter of the Greek Air Force (HAF) suffered an accident on Thursday (18), during the landing at Andravida Air Base. The pilot ejected safely.

The accident occurred around 15:40 pm (local time) during a routine training session. In a note, the HAF states that the pilot ejected on the ground, being taken to the General University Hospital of Patras. He was later referred to Aviation General Hospital 251 for medical evaluation.

The accident is already under investigation. 

According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos, spoke with the pilot by telephone. Quoting the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, the newspaper claims that the soldier is fine. “Let's go hard. We continue”, encouraged the Minister.

Panagiotopoulos also spoke with the President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou. In the conversation, the minister informed Katerina about the circumstances of what happened. The president expressed her satisfaction that the pilot ejected safely.

Second flightglobal, the Greek Air Force has 114 F-16C fighters and another 39 two-seat F-16D. The aircraft make up the backbone of Hellenic Fighter Aviation, which also operates the aging (but modernized) F-4E Phantom II. Soon the Dassault Rafale will also be part of this group.
