With cutting-edge infrastructure available to its engers and aircrew, Ilhéus Airport reaffirmed its commitment to operational safety after reaching, this Friday (17), the 100% mark in the PAPI inspection (from English, Precision Approach Path Indicator) at runway 11 of the airport. The equipment, also available at runway 29, works as a precision visual aid that guides the pilot to obtain and maintain the correct approach for landing, ensuring that aircraft approach more safely and efficiently.
The inspection was carried out by the Special Flight Inspection Group (GEIV) of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). During a period of approximately two hours, the Hawker IU-93A aircraft made several low es on the terminal's runway to check and adjust the instruments.
According to a Marcos Mariano, manager of Ilhéus Airport, the results reflect the concessionaire's commitment to providing safer, faster and more comfortable travel experiences to s of the enterprise. "It is always a pleasure to welcome the GEIV teams to our terminal. With the inspection carried out this afternoon, we are certain that Ilhéus Airport is increasingly prepared to receive commercial and general aviation operations in total safety at the main air terminal on the Costa do Cacau", he says.
How does PAPI work?
The PAPI, whose literal translation is “Precision Approach Course Indicator” is a piece of equipment that allows the pilot to know if he is making a correct descent to the runway – or if he is higher or lower than the ideal position.
It consists of four boxes that produce beams of light ranging from red to white. They allow the pilot to identify the positioning of the aircraft at the time of landing:
- 2 red and 2 white: the pilot is at the ideal descent angle;
- 3 or 4 white: high descent angle;
- 3 or 4 red lights: it is approaching too low
