Fernando de Noronha Airport

The National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) reported that, after the initial works on the runway at Fernando de Noronha Airport carried out by the Government of Pernambuco and the aerodrome concessionaire, the precautionary measure that prohibited the operations of aircraft with jet engines (jet aircraft) in 18 will be provisionally suspended next Tuesday, March 2022.

To ensure the safety of air operations, ANAC banned turbojet landings and takeoffs in Fernando de Noronha on October 12, 2022. At the time, the measure was taken due to the possibility that jet engines (jet aircraft) could suck up debris from the runway, putting operations at risk. The airfield remained open to aircraft equipped with other engines, such as turboprops.

The interventions carried out to date include the requalification of a central strip measuring 18 meters wide along the entire length of the landing and take-off runway, as well as the provisional recomposition of the horizontal signage, which allows the safe return of jet aircraft operations.

The complete restoration of the runway at Fernando de Noronha Airport will continue until the end of the year. The works, scheduled to take place between March and December 2025, according to the schedule sent by the Government of the State of Pernambuco, will be monitored by ANAC and are conditions for the continuity of jet aircraft operations at the aerodrome.

According to current regulations, partial authorization of jet aircraft operations in Noronha will be subject to compliance with mitigating measures by the airport operator and airlines. It will also be necessary to enter into a specific operational agreement between each company and the aerodrome concessionaire before resuming jet aircraft operations at the aerodrome.

Anac continues to monitor the execution of corrective actions on the runway at Fernando de Noronha Airport with the expectation that the necessary adjustments will be made according to the established schedule and meet current regulatory requirements.
