17th of July – For aviation is it superstition or coincidence?

July 17 Aviation Accidents TAM 3054

This date may be considered a superstition for many, for others just a coincidence, but it is marked by three major air accidents, one in the United States, another in Brazil and the last in Ukraine. Interestingly, all three accidents have the number 7 involved in common, either on the date or on the flight number. Check below these major accidents that occurred on July 17th.

TWA 800

It was July 17, 1996 when the Boeing 747-131, TWA registration N93119 took off from JFK Airport in the United States, and was heading to Rome in Italy with a stopover in Paris, the aircraft carried 212 engers and 18 more crew on board.

When crossing the American coast near the Moriches Islands, the aircraft suffered an explosion in the fuel tanks, according to the final report released by the NTSB four years after the accident.

The final report noted an electrical spark that was not identified but caused a short circuit on the outside. Next to the fuel tanks are also the air conditioning systems of the aircraft, which overheated on this occasion, causing an abnormal electrical voltage in the wiring of the fuel systems.

The tank is prepared to withstand high temperatures, however, at the time of failure, the temperature of the systems exceeded 180°C, melting the wiring insulation and culminating in the explosion. See the video below:

The final report on the TAM 3054 accident released by CENIPA in 2009 pointed out flaws in the airport's infrastructure. A work carried out shortly before the accident on the asphalt of the main runway did not include the grooving (grooves for water drainage), the lack of grooves, together with the procedures performed by the pilots in the cockpit resulted in the accident.

During the flight, the plane was shot down while flying over eastern Ukraine, 40km away from the border with Russia.

In July 2014 there was a climate of tension in the eastern region of Ukraine with pro-Russian separatists who dominated the region, initial reports pointed out that the aircraft of flight MH17 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile fired using the Buk missile system.

The two parties that conflicted both the Ukrainian government and the pro-Russian separatists denied responsibility for firing the missile against the MH17, but the final report pointed out that the firing took place in Ukrainian territory controlled by pro-Russian separatist rebels, near Pervomaisky, 6 kilometers south of Snizhne.

The report also shows that the missile system was transported from Russia to Ukraine, and later returned to Russia after the accident.
