Korean Air implements new cabin procedures to deal with turbulence.

Following the example of many international airlines, Korean Air has updated its cabin service procedures to deal with severe turbulence. The measure was a response to incidents of intense turbulence, which led to injuries to both engers and crew.

In a statement, Korean Air announced that it will end cabin service on all medium and long-haul flights 40 minutes before landing, 20 minutes earlier than previously. The airline highlighted that this change will allow flight attendants to complete their service before the aircraft begins its descent at the destination airport.

“Turbulence has become a persistent and growing problem in recent years, with the number of incidents doubling in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the first quarter of 2019. Turbulence is becoming more frequent, especially as aircraft descend, due to to the large temperature differences between altitudes.”

In addition, Korean Air also highlighted that when crossing an area with potential for turbulence, pilots activate the “fasten seat belt” sign in the cabin, asking engers to sit down and buckle their seat belts. The company reminded engers of the importance of following the crew's instructions and remaining in their seats.

According to the company, encounters with unexpected turbulence or clean air have occurred frequently, and the best way to ensure safety on board is to keep your seat belt fastened. Additionally, engers are advised to store their carry-on luggage in the overhead compartment or under the seat to avoid injuries from falling items.
