In its efforts to lead the decarbonization of aviation, LATAM has just become the first airline in Brazil to have 100% compensated charter flights in the national and international market originating in Brazil. Now, all charter contracts carried out by LATAM in Brazil will include the compensation value, which varies according to origin, destination and aircraft model. The expectation is that emissions from more than 500 flights will be offset per year in Brazil.
The initiative is an opportunity for LATAM companies and customers from different sectors to compensate for chartered flights with the company. They will all receive a certificate proving compensation with carbon credits based on what was emitted during the flight. The credits acquired will be used for the conservation of the Colombian Orinoquia.
THE LATAM GROUP'S SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY
In May 2021, the LATAM group renewed its global sustainability strategy and established commitments to protect the environment in South America over the next 30 years in a collaborative manner based on dialogue. All commitments are focused on the pillars of Climate Change, Circular Economy and Shared Value, connected with the fulfillment of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The LATAM group's three main goals are: eliminate single-use plastics by 2023 and be a zero-waste-to-landfill company by 2027; reduce or offset the equivalent of 50% of domestic CO2 emissions by 2030; and be a carbon neutral company by 2050.
