LATAM carried out this Thursday afternoon (16/5) the largest cargo transport by an airline at the Canoas Air Base (RS). In a t operation of the Solidarity Plane program with the Brazilian Ministry of Defense, the LATAM Cargo Boeing 767 operated the special and free flight on the route from Guarulhos Air Base. On board, a load of 51 tons of donations of basic food baskets, water, mattresses and blankets, among other items, collected by companies, citizens and third sector institutions to benefit the victims of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul.
The 2-hour flight reduced the travel time of cargo between the two cities by 1 day compared to road transport. Now, LATAM's Solidarity Plane program has already added a total of 84 tons of humanitarian aid and 28 volunteers (doctors, veterinarians, nurses and military personnel) sent free of charge to Rio Grande do Sul since May 9, 2024, both on enger flights to airports in the South region and on special LATAM flights to Canoas Air Base.
LATAM is also transporting free of charge to the Air Bases of Guarulhos (SP) and Brasília (DF) other donations that the Federal Government collects until May 20th at the Armed Forces barracks, Fire Department units and Post Office agencies. From Guarulhos and Brasília, the Ministry of Defense carries out other humanitarian flights to take these donations to the Canoas Air Base.
Additionally, LATAM has also acted free of charge in transporting donations collected by its partners in Brazil: Movimento União BR, CVC and Government of the State of Santa Catarina.
For 11 years, LATAM's Solidarity Plane program has benefited more than 140 million people in Brazil with the free transport of more than 921 tons of cargo, 4,6 animals and 282 million vaccines against Covid-19 for all Brazilian states and the Federal District (more than 70% of the total doses shipped by the airline sector within the country since 2020). The program puts LATAM's connectivity at the service of Brazilian society in health, environmental emergencies and catastrophes.
