An earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday (28) caused the collapse of the air traffic control tower at Nay Pyi Taw airport, resulting in the death of all employees on site.
The information was released by the Yangon Modern News Agency, which reported the collapse of the structure due to the intensity of the tremor. A local military source confirmed the incident to the Yangon Times. “The air traffic control tower collapsed. All the personnel working there died.”
The earthquake also caused damage in several areas of the city, affecting infrastructure and making it difficult to obtain an accurate number of victims, as roads were damaged.
Authorities are still assessing the full impact of the earthquake on aviation in the region and the emergency measures to be taken to restore airport operations.
