The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, announced today (14) that Santos Dumont Airport may be limited to flights only to Brasília (BSB) and Congonhas (CGH), with other domestic flights transferred to Galeão (GIG) .
According to information published on Portal G1, Paes said that such decision was taken after a meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in which Lula gave the green light for the transfer of flights.
Still according to the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, international flights will also be more restricted at Santos Dumont, indicating that anyone who chooses to take a domestic flight with an international connection from within Rio de Janeiro will have to travel to Galeão. This measure aims to reduce the imbalance of flights between the two main airports in Rio de Janeiro.
"We asked a lot in the Bolsonaro government and it was not answered, and today the president (Lula) decided that he will do it. From then on, we will decide on the date, but the Santos Dumont airport will only be used for the Rio-São Paulo/Congonhas and Rio-Brasília airlift. And Rio de Janeiro International Airport is once again receiving the domestic flights it has always had“, announced the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes.
Finally, it is not yet known when and if the measure for transferring flights from Santos Dumont to Galeão will come into force, given that Galeão airport in recent years has accumulated losses for the Changi group, the company responsible for managing Tom Jobim airport .
In the face of numerous studies, at the beginning of the year there was a proposal for mixed istration at Galeão, however, the federal government is studying that there are new investments so that the terminal can become more attractive and reduce the 'competition' of domestic flights with Santos Dumont .
