Following the announcement by the Ministry of Ports and Airports to revoke the rule that limited the radius of airports that could connect with Santos Dumont from January, the measure was seen positively by entities in the airline sector, including airlines.
Although there are no restrictions for other destinations in Brazil, Santos Dumont Airport will have an annual limit of up to 6.5 million engers and the new rule continues until January 2024. The decision should be published in the Official Gazette of the Union later this week.
At the time this article was written, only LATAM Brasil commented on the decision, read below:
”LATAM Brasil celebrates the technical and positive decision of the Ministry of Ports and Airports, which revoked this Wednesday (8/11) the distance limit for flights at Santos Dumont airport, establishing in its place a ceiling of 6,5 million of engers per year from January 2024.
LATAM understands that this is the measure that makes the most sense for engers in Rio de Janeiro and for the balance of the city's airports. This is because it adopts necessary limits for the operation of Santos Dumont without taking away the consumer's freedom to choose where to fly, in accordance with the best practices in global aviation.
LATAM reaffirms its commitment to Rio de Janeiro and to the democratization of access to air transport throughout Brazil. Soon, the company will announce a new redesign of its route network in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.”
