South Korea announces Embraer's C-390 as its new military transport aircraft

This Monday (4), South Korea announced the Embraer C-390 to make up the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) fleet in military transport, displacing Airbus and Lockheed Martin.

For the acquisition of the aircraft, the Defense Acquisition Program istration (DAPA) announced that the deal is valued at 710 billion won ($544,4 million), however, the total number of aircraft that will be will be acquired, but sources close to the matter say that three units are guaranteed. 

The agreement also includes the provision of services and , including training, ground equipment and spare parts. The contract value will be included in Embraer's order book for the fourth quarter of 2023.

South Korea is the seventh country to select the C-390, after Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria and the Czech Republic. The C-390 is redefining military airlift and challenging the logic behind current and future generation platforms by offering multi-mission capability, reliability and interoperability.

To date, South Korea only uses the Lockheed Martin C-130J, showing the extent of the Brazilian aircraft's relevance in the international market.  

The C-390 can carry more payload (26 tons) compared to other military transport aircraft in its class, and flies faster (470 knots) and farther, being capable of performing a wide range of logistics, transport and launching cargo and troops, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting and humanitarian missions, operating on temporary or unpaved runways.
