Sweden orders further developments for the Gripen system

Saab announced this Wednesday (24) another contract with the Swedish Defense Materiel istration (FMV). The new agreement, valued at SEK 540 million, envisages further development work for the fighters JAS-39 Gripen from Sweden.

According to the manufacturer, the order is an extension of an existing contract and will be carried out during the 2024 business year, mainly at Saab facilities in Linköping, Gothenburg, Järfälla and Arboga. The agreement will enable the continued development of the Gripen system for the Swedish Armed Forces and other s of the fighter aircraft around the world. The order includes operation and of test aircraft and sophisticated equipment such as platforms and simulators, which will be used when Saab develops new future capabilities for Gripen C/D and Gripen E, as well as for upgrades to existing systems. 

“Gripen is designed for continuous upgrades to meet current and future threats. Continuous development requires sophisticated simulators and equipment that are easy to operate, cost-effective to maintain, and quickly adapt to new capabilities.”, said Lars Tossman, head of Saab's Aeronautics business area. “This order ensures that Gripen will remain at the forefront for a long time to come.”

According to the survey World Air Forces 2024, the Swedish Air Force has 94 JAS-39C/D fighters in operation and 60 Gripen E on order, with options for a further 10 aircraft. The model is also in service with the air forces of the Czech Republic, Thailand, South Africa and Brazil.
