Turkey’s Kizilelma UCAV prototype completes maiden flight with new engines and sensors

The Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) Kizilelma of Türkiye, in its production prototype configuration, made its first short flight on September 25, 2024, from Corlu, the company announced.

According to the company, the new prototype, which is the third in total and bears the tail number TC-ÖZB3, revealed “significant structural and airframe differences” compared to the original model. The Kizilelma The original first flew on December 14, 2022, using the first prototype, TC-OZB.

“The third prototype, which is the production prototype of Bayraktar Kızılelma, successfully completed its first flight today”, said the company's Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Selcuk. “It was a short test flight. Our tests will continue from now on.”

According to the manufacturer, in addition to the structural improvements, the avionics architecture of the Kizilelma was improved, and the vehicle performed flight with an afterburning engine, allowing it to reach near-sonic speeds and improve maneuverability at high speeds due to aerodynamic innovations.

Promoted together with the Anka-3 da Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), the UCAV is being presented as a collaborative wing system intended for operations Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) with the fifth-generation stealth fighter KAAN, with the potential to assume air-to-air combat roles. In addition to the Anka III, Kizilelma, together with the Baykur TB-3 and a naval version of the Hurjet, will be planned to operate from the amphibious ship TCG Anadolu and drone/helicopter platforms.
