The FAA has opened an investigation involving an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 (N800NN) and a Cessna R182 (N738PG) that were near Austin–Bergstrom Airport in Texas after a near-collide. The near-miss occurred last Wednesday (16), when the American 737 was making its approach for landing.
According to local media, American pilots had been informed about heavy traffic in the approach area, however, the plane ended up entering fog, causing it to approach the Cessna.
Thanks to the TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System), a safety system used in airplanes to avoid mid-air collisions, it was activated immediately and the 737 made a diversion when it was 120 meters close to the other plane.
Because he was flying at low altitude (visual) due to unfavorable weather conditions, it is quite likely that the Cessna pilot was not using the approach frequency, making an unexpected turn that resulted in a collision course with the Boeing 737. Both aircraft landed safely, however, the Cessna continued its flight to Gonzales Airport, Texas.
