First stage of paving of Salgado Filho Airport runway is almost complete

Fraport Brasil reported that work on the runways at Salgado Filho airport in Porto Alegre has progressed according to the projected schedule for the partial reopening of Porto Alegre Airport on October 21.

Due to the recent bad weather, the paving stage of the first part of the runway will be completed in the next few days. Next, work will be directed towards installing the horizontal signage necessary for the resumption of landing and takeoff operations on the 1.730m stretch of the runway that will be in operation from October 21st.

The aircraft lighting and beacon system equipment that will be used during the resumption of operations was recovered by the Fraport Brasil Maintenance team and is now being reinstalled for testing, which will continue over the next few days. The work on taxiways F and D has been completed, as have the planned interventions on taxilane and taxiway M4.

The power substation that supplies the visual aids has been reconnected and is undergoing testing. Next week, the GEIV aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) will conduct flights to check the equipment that assists aircraft in approach, landing and takeoff procedures. This activity is part of the approval process for the landing and takeoff runway to certify and authorize its operation.

In addition to completing the work on the runway, the IT systems, the installation of escalators, the baggage claim belt and the completion of the electrical power supply system at the enger Terminal are in the final stages of recovery.

To date, approximately 21% of the work scheduled for the partial reopening on October 85 has been completed. We would like to emphasize that the third and final phase of the works for the total recovery of the airport is scheduled to be completed on December 16, with the delivery of the 3.200m of the landing and takeoff runway, complete recovery of the airport's energy systems and infrastructure.

“We are meeting the proposed schedule so far. We are certain that the reopening of our airport will be of utmost importance to accelerate, mainly, the economy of our state. We still have a lot of work to do until the 21st,” says Cassio Gonçalves, director of infrastructure and maintenance.

Domestic flights at Porto Alegre airport will resume on October 21. The operation on a reduced runway (10m) will have the capacity to receive up to 1.730 flights daily, between 128am and 8pm. Azul, Gol and Latam airlines have confirmed the resumption of their flights and are already selling tickets. So far, the return of routes to the cities of Belo Horizonte/MG, Brasília/DF, Campinas/SP, Curitiba/PR, Guarulhos/SP, Rio de Janeiro/RJ and São Paulo/SP has been announced.
