A US Navy F-5N fighter crashed today (31) near Key West, Florida. Through an official statement, the Navy reported that the pilot was rescued alive after managing to eject from the fighter moments before crashing about 25 miles from Campo de Boca Chica around 9:20 am.
The pilot was rescued by the Navy with a Sikorsky MH-60S Seahawk helicopter designated for search and rescue. The pilot was safely transported to a Miami hospital for a medical evaluation following the rescue at sea.
The US Navy did not disclose details of the health status of the F-5N pilot as well as the name but reported that he is part of Fighter Squadron Composite 111, an adversary squadron (Aggressor) of the US Navy Reserve that is based in Key West Naval Air Station.
These F-5N Aggressor fighters are primarily used in low to medium level air attack simulations, the same aircraft are also used by the VFA-204 'River Rattlers' which has the t Reserve Naval Air Base in New Orleans.
The F-5N are versions that are being modified to look similar to the F-5AT versions operated by Tactical Air .
The US Navy said the fighter jet crash will be investigated.
