Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully attack drone storage base Shahed near Yeysk, Russia. The operation, which involved the Ukrainian Naval Forces and the Security Service of Ukraine, targeted a key facility with around 400 Iranian-made attack drones.
The storage facility was situated near the village of Oktyabrsky, south of the city of Yeysk, which is home to a Russian Naval Aviation airbase.
The attack is suspected to have used R-360 cruise missiles. Neptune. The Ukrainian General Staff stated that the attack resulted in a “precise hit” on the facility, with secondary explosions evidencing extensive damage.
“The destruction of the Shahed UAV storage base will significantly reduce the ability of Russian occupiers to terrorize peaceful residents of Ukrainian cities and towns”, the Ukrainian military said in an official statement.
Since late 2022, when Russia began using them to complement its missile strikes, these drones have been targeting critical infrastructure such as energy facilities, transportation networks and residential areas.
Made in Iran, the drones Shahed-136 are loitering munitions that proved crucial to Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.
These low-cost, long-range UAVs attack ground targets with explosive warheads and are often referred to as “kamikaze” or “suicide drones”, as they are designed for a single use, colliding with targets.
