The United States has bombed military targets in Yemen, aiming to weaken Hounthi militants, who use underground facilities to store weapons.
For the mission, the bomber Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit also known as “stealth bomber” (stealth bomber), was employed for the task. With this, the US is looking for a way to combat the militia that acts expressively in the Red Sea against Western ships, in of Hamas.
“The deployment of the U.S. Air Force’s B-2 Spirit long-range stealth bomber demonstrates the U.S. global offensive capability to strike against these targets when needed, anytime, anywhere,” said U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
It is the first time that the B-2 has been used against the Houthis, a Yemeni group that carries out attacks against Israel and receives direct from Iran.
Developed in the 1980s to act against the Soviet Union, the B-2 can carry up to 23 tons of conventional, guided, nuclear bombs or air-to-ground missiles. Northrop is currently working with the USAF on the development of the B-21 Raider, a new stealth bomber that is expected to replace both the B-2 and the B-1B Lancer.
The B-2 bomber stands out not only for its nuclear attack capability, but also for being able to fly without being detected by radar, giving it the title of “stealth bomber”, and is also the most expensive aircraft in the world ever produced, costing around US$2,1 billion per unit.
