After the incident, the control tower ed the pilots, and contained further landings until confirmation that a wheel had indeed fallen off the aircraft. As a result, the 777 made an unscheduled landing at Los Angeles airport under the supervision of firefighters.
Interestingly, the wheel ended up hitting a car that was parked on the outskirts of San Francisco airport, causing extensive damage; no one was injured.
