Operation Yanomami fines 111 aircraft used in illegal mining

In three months of operation, the Yanomami Operation to combat illegal mining activity in the Indigenous Land that gives rise to the operation, in Roraima, seized 89 aircraft, disabled 22 and inspected 87 airstrips and three clandestine ports.

Coordinated by Justice ministry and Public Security, through the Secretariat for Integrated Operations (Seopi), the action of Operation Yanomami also removed non-indigenous people and prospectors from indigenous lands, in addition to seeking to re-establish ethno-environmental protection bases.

During the period, 38 people were arrested for being related to environmental crimes. Almost 30 thousand kilos of ore, 850 ammunition and nine vessels were seized. In addition, 89 liters of fuel, 10 ferries, 11 vehicles, four tractors and 22 gas stations were banned.

The operation was carried out tly by the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police, the National Public Security Force, the National Indian Foundation (Funai), the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation ( ICMBio), National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL), National Petroleum Agency (ANP) and Ministry of Defense (MD).
