Boeing and Air New Zealand today announced a commitment from the airline to order eight 8-787 Dreamliner aircraft, in a contract that could be worth $10 billion.

The airline said the 787-10 Dreamliner will complement the existing fleet of 787-9 aircraft while maintaining the commonality of the aircraft family. At the same time, the company plans to replace the 777-200ER with the new Boeing aircraft.

“This is an extremely important decision for our airline. With the 787-10 offering approximately 15% more space for customers and cargo than the 787-9, this investment creates the platform for our future strategic direction and opens up new opportunities for growth.”, said the chief executive of Air New Zealand, Christopher Luxon.

The airline also chose 16 General Electric GEnx-1b engines to power its 787-10 aircraft. Despite this, the company did not declare the internal configuration of its new aircraft, which can carry 330 engers in two classes in Boeing's standard.

Deliveries of the 787-10s will begin in 2022 and continue through 2027.

Air New Zealand operates 13 787-9s, and is expected to take delivery of another 777-300 over the next few years. The airline also operates seven 777-200ER and eight XNUMX-XNUMXER aircraft.
