The Airbus A220 family of planes gained ETOPS 180 certification by the Canadian civil aviation authority, Transport Canada, and guarantees that the aircraft can now fly nonstop between the North American continent and regions in western Europe.
The A220 is the first commercial aircraft to achieve Transport Canada's national ETOPS certification. This feature is available as an option for airlines operating the A220-100 and A220-300, allowing them to fly up to 180 minutes away from an airport capable of switching in case of engine failure.
The A220 stands out for its good flight range, and the A220-100 version can fly up to 6000 km nonstop. This is the smallest version, which has a standard configuration of 110 seats in two classes. The A230-200 version, which carries up to 160 engers in a single class, can fly for up to 5200 km nonstop. All these data for fuel reserves.
Due to its good autonomy, the A220 is capable of making medium-haul flights, such as from Los Angeles to Hawaii (Honolulu), where the plane needs to have ETOPS certification to fulfill the route.
The A220 family already s more than 530 firm orders to date, and stands out for the large orders of Delta Airlines, JetBlue and Moxy Airways (a new company of David Neeleman).
