Airbus and TotalEnergies have signed a strategic partnership to address the challenges of decarbonizing aviation through sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
In line with the objective of achieving carbon neutrality in the aviation industry by 2050, this partnership aims to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the sector, in which Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) play a fundamental role. SAF provided by TotalEnergies can reduce CO90 emissions over its life cycle by up to 2% compared to its fossil fuel equivalent.
The partnership will cover two main areas:
- TotalEnergies’ supply of SAF for more than half of Airbus’ needs in Europe.
A research and innovation program that aims to develop 100% sustainable fuels, adapted to current and future aircraft designs. - The impact of SAF composition on reducing CO2 emissions and non-CO2 effects, such as contrails, will also be studied.
Airbus and TotalEnergies confirm their common interest in promoting SAF technology and strengthening their collaboration to decarbonize the aviation industry:
- TotalEnergies has been supplying the SAF used by Airbus for aircraft deliveries in Toulouse, , since 2016.
- TotalEnergies also supplied fuel for several of the first SAF-operated flights on Airbus aircraft:
- In May 2021, the first long-distance flight using French-made SAF was with an A350 between Paris and Montreal;
- In November 2021, the first flight of an H225 helicopter, from the “Super Puma” family, was carried out using 100% SAF;
- In March 2023, the first flight of the A321neo was carried out with 100% SAF.
For Patrick Pouyanné, President and CEO of TotalEnergies, “the development of sustainable aviation fuels is at the heart of our company's transition strategy. We are happy to form a strategic alliance with Airbus to play our part together in meeting the challenge of decarbonizing aviation. TotalEnergies has been working hard to respond to the industry's new demand for a reduced carbon footprint. Our company has set itself a target of 1,5 million tons of SAF produced annually by 2030,” added the executive.
According to Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus, “accelerating the deployment of sustainable aviation fuels is essential to meeting our targets for reducing aviation carbon emissions by 2030. This partnership between Airbus and TotalEnergies demonstrates the will of manufacturers aerospace and leading energy producers and suppliers to work together to meet this challenge. We are determined to meet our decarbonization goals and ensure that aviation can continue to play its valuable role for society in the future”, reinforced Guillaume.
