Airbus signs contract to develop new aerodynamics software

Airbus signed a partnership with two of Europe's leading research facilities, ONERA (French Center for Aerospace Research) and DLR (German Aerospace Centre) during a ceremony at the 2017 International Paris Air Show. The partnership was signed by Charles Champion (Vice -Executive President of Airbus Engineering), Thierry Michal (General Technical Director of ONERA) and Professor Rolf Henke (Member of the Executive Board of DLR for Aeronautical Research).

The cooperation will focus on the development of new computational fluid dynamics (CFD) capabilities based on flow prediction, ultimately a common platform will be made available to the European Research Community and all Airbus divisions.

The three have committed to deploying a common development and integration team with the ability to deliver industry-ready, tested code containing the latest state-of-the-art features relevant to aeronautics. This advanced fluid testing technology will play a key role in the development of next generation aircraft through improved aerodynamic design.

“At DLR we aim to advance the trend of digitization in aviation and therefore address the challenges that the European aviation industry will face in the coming decades. We are excited about this opportunity to collaborate with Airbus and ONERA to develop a common next generation code. DLR's extensive experience in deg Computational Fluid Dynamics software for air and space applications will be a key ingredient," said Rolf Henke, Executive Board Member for Aeronautics Research at DLR.

“This Partnership is an opportunity to strengthen the ONERA-DLR cooperation with Airbus. Drawing on CFD centers of expertise in and for an ambitious project: To develop state-of-the-art simulation software capable of handling the challenges of the next decade,” said Thierry Michal, General Technical Director of ONERA.
