The IBGE released this week the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) September, which was -0,29%, the third consecutive month of deflation.
In the year, the IPCA accumulates an increase of 4,09% and, in the last 12 months, of 7,17%, below the 8,73% observed in the immediately previous 12 months. In September 2021, the variation had been 1,16%.
Despite the -1,98% drop in the IPCA on transport, airfares increased by 8,22% in September. As a result, airline tickets had the greatest individual positive impact on the September index (0,05 pp), among the 377 sub-items surveyed.
In August, the IPCA ed a drop of 12,07% in the average prices of airline tickets.
It is worth mentioning that we published twice in April and this month that Petrobras imposed an 18% readjustment and right after 6,7%. From January 1st to May 1st, the increase reached 48,7%, according to Petrobras data compiled by the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR).
Kerosene is one of the main inputs used by airlines and s for up to 40% of the cost of a flight. Therefore, the increase in fuel prices directly influences the average price of airline tickets.
